Justin Trudeau’s firearms ban, signed into law on May 1st, has come up against major public opposition in a very short space of time.
UPDATE: The petition now has over 216,000 signatures and is the largest parliamentary petition in Canadian history.
The Order in Council, which came into force with immediate effect, banned over 1,500 types and variants of firearms in Canada, including the AR-15 rifle and the Ruger Mini-14 rifle.
Within days, an online parliamentary petition was set up calling for Trudeau to scrap the order. At time of writing, the petition has over 116,000 signatures and currently stands as the second-most signed petition in Canadian history.
The petition can be SIGNED HERE by all Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
The Liberal’s gun ban has been implemented using poor research, thought and consideration for law abiding Canadians. There are more than 20 million guns legally owned by Canadians for hunting, competition, protection and predator control. There are 75,634 legally-registered AR-15 rifles – now banned by Trudeau – which have never been used as part of a mass-shooting in Canada. There are 300,000 Canadians with a firearms licence who own at least one legally registered handgun, and there are 3,000 guns bought and sold in Canada every day by citizens who face strict licensing and purchasing regulations in the interests of public safety.
Not to mention, Canada has just 0.61 gun related homicides per 100,000 people each year – lower than Germany’s (1.01) and the USA’s (4.46) – a vast majority of which were committed using firearms illegally smuggled in to the country from the United States.
But what does Justin Trudeau do? He passes legislation, without a single debate in parliament, that takes guns away from law abiding Canadians. Why? Because apparently, that will stop criminals using illegally obtained weapons via smuggling routes.
You couldn’t make this up. The gun ban serves no other purpose but to score cheap political points with the anti-gun lobby at the expense of law abiding Canadians being able to legally hunt, protect themselves and participate in competitions with their rifle of choice.
The parliamentary petition calls for:
“…the Prime Minister to immediately scrap his government’s May 1, 2020, Order in Council decision related to confiscating legally owned firearms and instead pass legislation that will target criminals, stop the smuggling of firearms into Canada, go after those who illegally acquire firearms, and apologize to legal firearms owners in Canada.”
This is the action that Justin Trudeau should have taken in the first place. Common sense policy must take precedence over draconian measures to confiscate legally acquired property, especially when such measures are based on how “scary” or “offensive” a gun looks to those who have no firearms knowledge or training.
We encourage all those who value the rights of Canadians to legally own firearms to sign the parliamentary petition here. Common sense must prevail and our rights must be protected.
