Polls Analyst: Conservative Sweep In Saskatchewan Possible

A leading polls analyst has predicted that Saskatchewan could surpass Alberta in terms of conservative support this upcoming election.

Éric Grenier, who is also creator of thewrit.ca, says history could repeat itself this September when voters head to the polls.

“There’s the potential that at the end of the election, Saskatchewan could be the most conservative province in the country,” he said.

The Conservative’s percentage of the vote in Saskatchewan jumped from 48 to 64 from 2015 to 2019. Conversely, the NDP dropped from 25 to 17 per cent, and the Liberals dropped from 24 per cent to 11.

“I’m not really seeing a lot of opportunities for the other parties to win seats. The polls are still very good for the conservatives in Saskatchewan,” said Grenier.

“In Saskatchewan, Scott Moe is still pretty popular. [Provincial NDP Leader] Ryan Meili never really broke through. I think that is helping for the federal Conservatives.”

With polls showing the Conservative Party of Canada and the People’s Party of Canada heading into the federal election on the back foot, provinces appear to be telling a different story.

With the possibility of Saskatchewan becoming the most conservative province and Nova Scotia electing a conservative government last night for the first time since 2009, momentum for conservative values may be shifting among the Canadian public.

National polling still indicates that the Liberal Party are ahead in the polls. However, anyone who has the slightest understanding of politics knows that polls have been wrong before, and their election predictions are just that: predictions.

Nevertheless, conservative parties across the country need to keep their foot on the gas and emphasize that, ultimately, this election is between parties who value freedom and civil liberties, and those that want to take them away in the name of COVID-19.
