Canada’s economy lost 200,000 jobs last month, according to Statistics Canada, as COVID-19 shutdowns forced many businesses to close.
The unemployment rate now stands at 6.5% – double what was expected.
Most of the jobs lost were in Ontario and Quebec; two provinces that saw some of the harshest lockdown reactions. Economists had been expecting a bleak figure, but the 200,000 lost jobs was roughly twice what they were anticipating.
As was the case during previous waves, accommodation and food services bore the brunt of the job losses, with 113,000 jobs lost during the month. Another public-facing industry, retail, was also hit hard, losing 26,000 workers.
The job losses are damning given that a recent study by Johns Hopkins University found that lockdowns only reduced COVID-19 deaths by 0.2%.
The authors of the findings reviewed 24 separate studies, discovering “that lockdowns have had little to no effect on COVID-19 mortality,” while causing enormous economic and social costs wherever they were implemented.
Lockdowns have done nothing but single-handedly destroyed our economy, provided governments with over-reaching and authoritarian powers, all the while doing nothing to protect our healthcare system and save lives.
It’s time for Canadians to stand with our truckers in Ottawa, demand an end to these pointless COVID-19 mandates, and peacefully protest wherever possible.
